While investigating shots fired on Victory Drive Friday afternoon, Columbus police arrested a mechanic after they found the man reloading a 9 mm pistol.

No one was injured from the random gunshots fired at 2500 Victory Drive, the location of Rainbow Motors, but Carlos Hernandez was taken into custody around 2:45 p.m. at the scene. He was charged with one count each of discharging a firearm in city limits and reckless conduct.

After a Columbus Recorder's Court hearing Saturday morning, Hernandez was ordered to serve 20 days in the Muscogee County Jail on discharging the firearm. Bonds totaling $3,750 were set on the reckless conduct charge and other minor traffic offenses.

In a report, Patrolman Ken Culverson said two officers in the area heard about nine shots near Rainbow Motors where Hernandez works as a mechanic.

Police moved closer to the business and heard people talking near the backside of a wood privacy fence. "I then walked around the corner of the fence and observed Mr. Carlos Hernandez reloading a Bryco Arms 9 mm pistol," Culverson said. "I then instructed Mr. Hernandez to drop the firearm several times."

Moments later, the 38-year-old Hernandez placed the gun on a table and sat on the ground.

After Hernandez was taken into custody, another officer arrived on the scene to speak in Spanish to Hernandez. "I'm sorry," the shooting suspect said to police. "I did not mean any harm."

Police seized the gun. No damage was found to any nearby property.

The suspect had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage before his arrest, police said.
