Spencer High aims for playoff berth in 2013

August 25, 2013

Coach: Calvin Arnold, second year, 3-7 (3-7 overall)

Assistant coaches: Robert Sanders, co-offensive coordinator, Walter Jackson, co-offensive coordinator, Calvin Arnold, defensive coordinator, Larmot Burton, Marvin Broadwater, Edward Mullins

Homefield: A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium/Kinnett Stadium

2011 record: 3-7

Region: GHSA Region 5-AAGood news: The offense should have a lot of success. It returns running back Damarkus Robins, quarterback Tarvarska Davis, wide receiver/running back Darrius Lightfoot and wide receiver Richard Jones at the skill positions. Those guys put up big numbers a season ago, led by Robins' near 3,000 all-purpose yards. Those guys have the ability to once again be prolific in 2013.

Bad news: The team is looking to find its identity on defense. Last year, it allowed nearly 40 points per game, negating the high-powered offense. Only two starters return, but the unit could improve in its second year in head coach/defensive coordinator Calvin Arnold's system. Sometimes a fresh start is what a unit needs to find its footing.

Our take: While some may classify a playoff berth as a surprise simply because of the team's history, that should be Spencer's expectation this season. Kendrick was able to break a playoff drought in the region last year, and Spencer finished right on the Cherokees' heels. If it can improve on defense, postseason football is a definite possibility.
