Shaw looks for replacement for Ledger-Enquirer All-Bi-City offensive player of the year Chandler Whittlesey

August 25, 2013

Coach: Kyle Adkins, second year, 6-5 (6-5 overall)

Assistant coaches: Kyle Adkins, offensive coordinator; Chuck Stamey, defensive coordinator; Greg Sullivan, Pat McGregor; William Maben

Homefield: Kinnett Stadium

2012 record: 6-5, lost to Monroe Area 21-14 in first round of Class AAAA playoffs

Region: GHSA Region 5-AAAAGood news: The Raiders took a step forward last season, winning six games and nearly picking up their first postseason win since 2008. The real good news? Shaw wasn't satisfied with that output. This program feels like a winner, and it has the players to make that a reality. Its front seven, a strength last season, is strong once again and should turn a lot of games in the Raiders' favor.

Bad news: While the attitude is in the right place, the team still has a number of holes to fill, most notably the quarterback position vacated by 2012 All-Bi-City offensive player of the year Chandler Whittlesey. Adkins said himself that it is impossible to replace a player like Whittlesey, but the team will try to plug the hole in other areas.

Our take: Shaw has enough going for it to take a step forward despite the losses. The defense will still be very good, and it should once again contend for a playoff spot in Class AAAA. The region is brutal once again, led by state champion Sandy Creek. Winning the region is still probably a long shot, but Shaw will be in the mix for one of those other three playoff spots.
