Smiths Station returns most of team from last season

August 25, 2013

Coach: Mark Rose, sixth year, 24-28 (129-49 overall)

Assistant coaches: Roy Brown, offensive coordinator, Cody Fournoy, co-defensive coordinator, Adam Johnson, co-defensive coordinator, Ruty Davis, Cencade Pennington, Tommy Sanders, Randy Daniels, Jared Harrelson, Clinton Britton

Homefield: Panther Stadium

2012 record: 5-5

Region: AHSAA Class 6A Region 3Good news: A team that nearly made the playoffs, losing to Central in a de facto play-in game, returns a ton on both sides of the balls. Each of their leaders at the skill positions, including quarterback Jerrell Gilmore, running backs J.J. Dancy and Devante Marshall, and wide receiver Johnny Woods, will all be back. There is little question that the team will have improved from last season.

Bad news: Its region is very difficult. Opelika, Auburn and Carver-Montgomery were among Alabama's best teams a season ago. Central had an off season, but appears to be very strong heading into 2013. There isn't much room for error when it comes to region play. If Smiths Station is to make the playoffs, it can't take any weeks off.

Our take: Smiths Station looks to be a very solid team. Opelika, Auburn and Carver-Montgomery all lost key pieces. Will Smiths Station be able to close the gap, or are those teams still too talented? It's hard to say, but the Panthers should certainly be in the conversation for the final playoff spot out of the region. Any team that wants to be higher than that in this region has its work cut out for it.
