Russell County to lean on defense in 2013

August 25, 2013

Coach: Demond McCoy, second year, 3-6-1

Assistant coaches: Shawn Taylor, offensive coordinator, Sam Moates, defensive coordinator, Demario Billingslea, Juan Walton, Greg Smith, Jeff Gibson, Tavares Davis

Homefield: Corbitt-Mitchell Stadium

2012 record: 3-6-1

Region: AHSAA Class 5A Region 2Good news: The first season under Demond McCoy wasn't perfect by any means, but it was a success. Despite blowouts against Central and Eufaula, among others, the Warriors were at least competitive at times throughout the season. They won three games and had a chance to win two others. The defense returns eight players, and that unit should again have a chance to perform at a high level.

Bad news: There isn't a lot returning on offense, and the Warriors again get thrown into the fire with a game against Central at Garrett-Harrison Stadium. Russell County has the personnel to be competitive, but it's likely going to take more experience in McCoy's system to really contend against the top teams in its region.

Our take: It's hard to imagine the Warriors taking a step back considering the top-notch defensive players they have returning this season. Will they make the playoffs? That remains to be seen, but the team should be better now than they were last season. Three wins, nearly five, were the magic numbers in 2012. Adhering to logic, which says the team will be better in Year 2 under McCoy, a .500 season should be the minimum goal for the Warriors, though more than that could be icing on the cake.
