Marion County looks for deep run in playoffs

August 25, 2013

Coach: Mike Swaney, fourth season 30-6

Assistant coaches: Richard McCorkle, offensive coordinator, Mike Swaney, defensive coordinator, Billy Law, Kalvin Baker, Wayne Johnson, Trey Reeves, Harry Jaynes, Luke Jernigan, Willie Williams

Homefield: Eagle Stadium

2012 record: 9-3, lost 39-21 to Wilcox County in the GHSA Class A state quarterfinals

Region: 4-AGood news: For three seasons under coach Mike Swaney, the Eagles have been about as consistently good as you can be. They won 10 games in 2010, 11 in 2011 and nine in 2012, reaching the second round of the playoffs each year (the second round was the quarterfinal in 2012). The good news is that Marion County isn't going to forget how to win football games. It may break in new starters and there may be a learning curve at times, but this program is a proven winner.

Bad news: It still hasn't solidified itself among the state's elite, even if it has in the region. It has never made it further than a state quarterfinal and must find a way to take the next step if it truly is going to become a perennial power in Class A football.

Our take: Anything less than nine or 10 wins and a playoff appearance would be a bit of a surprise. It only returns half its starters, but Marion County is senior heavy on defense and has proven it can win consistently under Swaney.
