Hardaway faces uphill battle in tough region

August 25, 2013

Coach: Jeff Battles, sixth year, 20-31 (37-38 overall)

Assistant coaches: Jeff Battles, offensive coordinator, Hunter Jackson, defensive coordinator, David Mackie, Kevin Noviello, Chris Liesendahl, Kendall Mills, Mike Gethin, James Short, James McGee, Kevin Orek

Homefield: Kinnett Stadium

2012 record: 3-7

Region: GHSA 1-AAAAAGood news: Experienced offensive line, starting quarterback, talented running back and a defensive leader all returning from last season -- what's not to like? On paper, the Hawks appear to be more prepared to make gigantic strides in the right direction than they have in years. The offensive line, led by senior Desmond Barmore, has a lot of size, quarterback Blake Berry understands the offense and junior running back Justin Crawford has home run potential.

Bad news: It has to overcome its own history, more than anything. Winning hasn't come regularly for the Hawks in recent years, and figuring out how to not just be talented, but play at a high level on a consistent week-to-week basis takes time. The region is solid and won't make anything easy on any of the playoff contenders.

Our take: There may be some moments where the Hawks fail to maximize their potential, but overall this team looks like the one to break the trend. The region is tough, but most teams are at a comparable skill level. It isn't crazy to suggest Hardaway may be hosting a playoff game by season's end.
