Columbus High faces tough region slate

August 25, 2013

Coach: Phil Marino, fifth year, 6-34 (6-34 overall)

Assistant coaches: Phil Marino, offensive coordinator, Tim Bunting, defensive coordinator, Bob Peters, Larry Ferrell, Joe Cherrone, Namu Keys, Chris Church, George Williams

Homefield: Kinnett Stadium/A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium

2012 record: 0-10

Region: GHSA 5-AAAAGood news: It's a new season and a new opportunity to start fresh. The team has a handful of talented seniors and returns eight starters on both sides of the ball. There is some decent size in the trenches, which should help the team improve inside. The coaches have shown excitement about the opportunity to improve and reverse the narrative that has been written for the past few seasons.

Bad news: Columbus is fighting its own history more than anything. It failed to win a game last season and hasn't won more than two since 2008. The region is among the hardest in the state and particularly unfriendly to teams like Columbus, which are trying to gain traction and make progress on a yearly basis.

Our take: It may be difficult to judge the Blue Devils' improvement on wins and losses in 2013. There is some real talent on their roster, but the schedule is not forgiving. Out of the region, the Blue Devils face Brookstone, Hardaway and Northside, then get the likes of Carrollton, LaGrange and Shaw before finishing the season against Sandy Creek. Playoffs are always the goal, but more important is the opportunity to experience some success.
