Chattahoochee County looking for consistency

August 25, 2013

Coach: Russell Morgan, third year, 5-15 (50-41-1 overall)

Assistant coaches: Chad Martin, offensive coordinator; Ed Lovvorn, defensive coordinator; Frank Saunders

Homefield: Panthers Stadium

2012 record: 3-7

Region: GHSA Region 5-AAGood news: Nine offensive starters and seven defensive starters returning from last year's squad will provide continuity and cut down on the learning curve for the Panthers. Two of their top offensive performers, Chris Askew and Jodi Perkins, return, as does a trio of senior linebackers who led the defense a season ago. Ladarius Taylor, Marcus Saunders and Del Lawrence combined for 246 tackles (26 for loss), 11 sacks, four fumbles forced and three interceptions.

Bad news: The team was less than impressive during a 3-7 campaign a year ago, and just returning players doesn't necessarily mean that trend will change. After wins in its first two games, Chattahoochee County lost seven of its final eight, all in region play, and it finished just one game ahead of last-place Jordan in the standings. The rest of the region has improved during the offseason, too, so gaining ground could be difficult.

Our take: On paper, the Panthers look like they could be a solid team. The defense, particularly at linebacker, will be a strength. Gaining a couple of games in the region should be an expectation, though making the playoffs in Region 5-AA won't come easy. More than anything, the Panthers should expect to be in the conversation deep into the season.
