Ethan Baber takes over at QB for Central

August 25, 2013

Coach: Woodrow Lowe, fourth year, 27-9 (49-38 overall)

Assistant coaches: Ryan Nelson, offensive coordinator, Chad Adams, co-defensive coordinator, Adrian Lyles, co-defensive coordinator, Matt Bell, Keith Wicker, Tripp Duke, Zack Berklin, Doc Brooks, Robert Wilson, Darren Morten

Homefield: Garrett-Harrison Stadium at Trawick Field

2012 record: 7-4, lost to Spain Park 43-13 in the first round of the AHSAA Class 6A state semifinals

Region: AHSAA Class 6A Region 3Good news: Six starters are back on offense, seven on defense. Athletic do-it-all back Traveon Samuel, who has scholarship offers from a number of SEC schools, is a junior and should be improved. The running game is deep, as is the defense. A year spent fighting for the final playoff spot in the region last season could prove beneficial to the Red Devils as it served as a reminder of the amount of work it takes to succeed in such a talented region.

Bad news: The offensive line lost quite a bit to graduation, including Cameron Fraser who signed with Louisville earlier this year. There may be some growing pains in the passing game as projected starter Ethan Baber has started just one game in high school. The region could again be among the best in the state, despite Auburn, Opelika and Carver-Montgomery each losing key pieces.

Our take: Growing pains, sure, but this team has a lot to offer. The skill positions on offense provide a lot of punch, and the defense should be a strength. By midseason, Central could evolve to the best team in its region.
