Brad Dehem era at Brookstone heads into Year 2

August 25, 2013

Coach: Brad Dehem, second year, 8-3 (8-3 overall)

Assistant coaches: James McKeel, offensive coordinator, Damian Daniels, defensive coordinator, Brian McCluskey, Bentley Sparks, Kim Sheek, Scott Pethtel, Branden Hall, Glenn Reese, Hunter Chapman

Homefield: Rex Knight Field

2012 record: 8-3, lost 49-33 to First Presbyterian in the first round of the Class A private-school playoffs

Region: GHSA 4-AGood news: A team that had to learn new schemes on both sides of the ball under a new head coach in 2012 enters the season with a much better understanding of what to expect. The defense also returns six of its 11 starters. The team knows how to win, as it has shown over the years under Blair Harrison and now Brad Dehem. That won't change this season.

Bad news: The Cougars will break in a new quarterback and must find some way to replace arguably its best player on both sides of the ball from a season ago, Madison McCluskey. The region is no breeze, and the Cougars will have to start fast in the season or risk losing ground early.

Our take: Outsiders may have a lot of questions about the Cougars, most notably about an offense that lost quite a bit to graduation, but Brookstone knows how to retool. It has won at least seven games for nine straight years, and that should be the expectation once again. If things bounce right for the Cougars, they should once again be a factor in the Class A playoffs.
