Council to decide today on two CSU athletic expansion projects

Columbus Council will be asked today to allow Columbus State University to spread its athletic presence off campus, to a proposed golf facility across the street from campus and down Milgen Road to the Cooper Creek Tennis Center.

Council will consider approving an agreement with CSU and the Columbus Regional Tennis Association to partner in expanding the tennis center at Cooper Creek Park and to OK a zoning change that would allow the university to build a golf instructional and practice center on 11 acres across University Avenue from the campus.

The tennis center expansion would include 12 hard courts and 10 clay courts along with a clubhouse and locker room facility that CORTA will own and operate and CSU will use as headquarters for its tennis program.

The city will pay about $1.5 million of the $5.4 million project from 2008 Local Option Sales Tax funds.

The $1.75 million golf facility will be owned and operated by the university and the project would have no financial impact on the city.

Only students and faculty will have access to the facility, which will be nestled in between residential land on two sides. It's east end will abut University Avenue and its west will stop at Primrose Road.

CSU golfers have been traveling about eight miles to Bull Creek Golf Course to practice, but would be able to walk to the new facility.

Council meets today at 5:30 p.m. in Council Chambers on the second floor of the City Services Center off Macon Road.
