Opelika police arrest suspect in assault, kidnapping

Police in Opelika, Ala. have arrested William Grenard Edwards, 50, of Opelika and have charged him with domestic violence second degree (assault) and kidnapping first degree.

At 7:38 Wednesday evening, officers of the Opelika Police Department responded to the 500 block of Maple Avenue in response to shots being fired.

According to a police report, a 63-year old Opelika man said he had been assaulted by an individual using a pistol. The man said the pistol had discharged several times as he was being struck with it.

The victim was not shot but received several cuts to his head. He was taken to the East Alabama Medical Center for treatment of his injury.

It was reported that the suspect grabbed a 43-year old woman who was at the residence and forced her into a vehicle and fled the area.

Approximately three hours later, the woman and the suspect were located on the front porch of a residence in the 300 block of Carver Avenue.
