Shaw quarterback Tyron Huff accounted for three touchdowns and the Raiders defense caused four turnovers as they defeated Northside Thursday night in the season opener for both teams, 20-2 at Kinnett Stadium.
"I will take 15 ugly wins against 10 pretty losses any time," Shaw coach Kyle Adkins said after the game. "This was a typical Northside-Shaw contest and it was not pretty, but it was a win. This is the third one I have been involved with and all of them have been like this,
"I was pleased with (Huff's) play and he really stepped up for us. We got a little complacent in the second half on offense, but our defense played a great game. Our coaches did a great job getting ready as Northside did not scrimmage before the season started."
Huff finished with 205 yards passing and two touchdowns with no interceptions. He passed 8 yards to Desmond Gomilla in the second quarter and then hit Jakobi Long on a 46-yarder in the final minute of the half as the Raiders took a 14-0 at intermission.
Huff then got a 10-yard running score in the final period for the Raiders third touchdown.
Northside scored when a snap went over Huff's head and he fell on the ball in the end zone for a Shaw safety.
The Raiders' Earl Brody set up the first Huff touchdown with a fumble recovery and Tyshun Davis also recovered a fumble to thwart Shaw's only first half drive on the 12.
The Patriots had a chance to score but Karastury was picked off twice and a field goal attempt by Nathan Robertson in the third quarter was wide.
Shaw limited the Patriots to 78 yards in the first half and 48 total yards of offense in the second half.
