Marion County 20, Kendrick 14: Eckert's two TD passes lift Marion County over Kendrick

FROM STAFF REPORTSSeptember 6, 2013

BUENA VISTA, Ga. -- Games between Marion County and Kendrick tend to be close. Last year's contest was won in overtime by Marion County.

The Eagles won again Friday night, defeating the Cherokees 20-14 at Eagles Stadium.

Marion County had its 20 points by halftime, thanks to two touchdown passes from Dustin Eckert to Trae Swanson and Lorenzo Smothers and two field goals from A.J. Wells.

Kendrick did not dent the scoreboard until the second half, but a 13-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Tyrell Griffin and a 2-yard run for a score by Marvin Lewis cut the deficit to six, 20-14.

Marion County's defense would hold, giving the Eagles their second win of the season.

Quarterback Eckert went 4-7 for 72 yards and two touchdowns for Marion County, and running back Johnny Royal had 25 carries for 87 yards.
