Glenwood 44, Evangel 13: Gators break open game in second quarter

Special to the Ledger-EnquirerSeptember 7, 2013

Glenwood exploded for three touchdowns in the second quarter to break open a tie and take a 44-13 win over Evangel Christian in the Gators homecoming game Friday night at Sammy Howard Field.

The score was 7-7 after the first period when the Glenwood defense came through with a big play, a fumble recovery at the 45 yard line. It took five plays for Glenwood to go the distance and Anthony Davis got the final three over tackle to give the Gators a 14-7 lead they would never relinquish.

Undriel Copeland then made it 20-7 later in the period when the Lions were forced to punt and went 7 yards to cap another five play drive. It was the first of three touchdowns for the running back for Glenwood, who had his best game of 2013.

In fact every starting player in the backfield for Glenwood scored a TD. Quarterback Lawson Humphries put the icing on the cake when he burst through the middle for a 63 yard run and it was 28-7 at the half.

The first quarter was a competitive one as Dylan Denny scored a TD on a four yard run in the first and Evangel's Johnathan Wiley broke open for a 25-yard run to match Denny's score. However, it was Wiley's fumble on the 45 that set up the go-ahead score for the Gators.

Copeland went over 100 yards rushing for the game and scored two more touchdowns in the second half, one on a 15 yard run and another on a 55 yard burst around end for his third TD. He finished with 11 runs for 158 yards and his three scores. Humphries also went over 100 with 124 yards in the first half and 17 in the second for a 141 total. Overall Glenwood amassed 439 yards on the ground.

Wiley for the Lions finished with 78 total yards rushing for the game. The Lions are now 0-2 while Glenwood improved to 1-2 on the year and will go back on the road to play Kingwood next Friday in Alabaster, Al.
