The body of a Phenix City man was pulled from a mobile home early Saturday after neighbors banged on his door and tried to rescue him from the burning structure at Cannon Trailer Park.

Neighbors said the man in his 40s died in the fire that ignited just before 3 a.m. at Lot 11, 41 Wommack Road in Ladonia.

Russell County Coroner Arthur Sumbry Jr. was not available to comment on the cause of death or when the man was pronounced dead.

Firefighters with the Ladonia Volunteer Fire Department were on the scene until 10 a.m. dousing the smoldering mobile home and a Nissan pickup truck destroyed in the fire.

Firefighters also kept the fire from spreading to the mobile home of a neighbor, Nelda Haden.

Haden said her son, Calvin Duffy, was outside smoking a cigarette when he first saw some smoke from a back window. Minutes later, more smoke poured from the single-wide mobile home.

“Me and my son went up there first, knocked on the wall and called him by his name but he didn’t answer,” Haden said.

The victim, an electrician, was last seen around 11:30 p.m., she said. Haden was afraid he may have taken his medication and fallen asleep.

Haden said she felt heat on the door and realized the structure was burning. “I said no, I can’t touch it no more,” she said.

An officer with the Phenix City Police Department arrived and they joined in efforts to rescue the man.

“We couldn’t get near it,” Haden said. “We went with police and tried to get in.”

A yellow strip of tape circle the gutted home Saturday afternoon. The walls on the west side were missing and the roof had collapsed.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
