Bowdon 36, Kendrick 30: Kendrick loses in final minutes to Bowdon

Special to the Ledger-EnquirerSeptember 12, 2013

Bowdon's Darnell Holland caught his second touchdown pass of the fourth quarter, the final coming with 1:51 left to play, to lead the Red Devils to a come-from-behind 36-30 victory over Kendrick Thursday night at A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium.

Holland's catch came on a fourth-and-13 play that covered 38 yards as he outfought the Kendrick secondary and fell in the end zone for his third touchdown of the game. The Red Devils decided to go for two and quarterback Marcus Thurman went in on a roll out for the final two points.

Kendrick (1-2, 0-1 Region 5-AA) had one last gasp and did connect on a 45 yard pass from Jonathan Hines to Loyoll Parks to the 27 but the Red Devils' defense stiffened and stopped the Cherokees on a fourth down to take the ball over and run out the clock.

Going into the fourth quarter, the Cherokees had a one-point lead, 22-21. But the Red Devils coughed up their second fumble and Kendrick recovered on the last play of the third quarter.

On a deliberate clock-eating drive, Kendrick went 41 yards and ate up 6:03 of the quarter with the Cherokees' Reno Lee getting the touchdown on a fourth and goal at the four. Lee ran for two and the Cherokees looked like they were in command, 30-21 with only 5:57 left to play.

That's when the speedy Holland took over for Bowdon (3-0, 1-0). On the first offensive play after the Kendrick kickoff, Holland struck with a 45 yard reception from Thurman and the extra point cut the lead to 30-28.

The Bowdon defense held Kendrick to a punt following the kickoff and that set up the final winning drive and the Red Devils big fourth down play that won the contest.

Holland was a big offensive threat as he had the two receptions for touchdowns covering 83 yards as well as the leading rusher in the game with 113 yards on eight carries.
