Houston County 40, Northside 17: Patriots come up shy against Houston County

Offensive play wasn't enough for the Patriots

Special to the Ledger-EnquirerSeptember 13, 2013

Football fans at Kinnett Stadium were treated to an offensive explosion as the two high school squads put up 57 points.

Unfortunately for the festive Northside High homecoming crowd, the Patriots came up on the short end of a 40-17 score to visiting Houston County.

The teams played a relatively quiet first quarter, with the Bears drawing first blood. Samsun West scored the first of his two touchdowns on a 7-yard pass from quarterback Taylor Boyett. Jordan Strevig's kick put the visitors ahead 7-0.

The touchdown held for the remainder of the opening period and nearly three minutes into the second. The Patriots put together a long drive, marching from their own 14 all the way to the Houston County 17. The 17-play drive stalled, and Nathan Robertson put the Patriots on the board with a 34-yard field goal, making the score 7-3.

The Bears answered the Northside field goal with two late touchdowns which gave them a 16-point lead at halftime.

On their ensuing possession after the Robertson kick, the Bears took only five plays and less than two minutes to score.

The key play was a long kickoff return by Chris Lewis. Lewis' 58-yard jaunt put the Bears in business on the Northside 36.

Houston County stopped the Patriots on their next drive and took over on downs at their own 29.

On second down from their own 48, the Bears scored on a 52-yard pass from Boyett to Darion Anderson to give Houston County a 19-3 halftime lead.

The Patriots fought back each time the Bears threatened to put the game out of reach.

A Romarcus Williams run with 8:36 to play in the third put the Bears up 26-3, but Northside answered with a Larry Gilyard 20-yard touchdown run.

Once again, the Bears stretched the lead to 33-10 on a 37-yard Gant run, but the Patriots came roaring back with a dramatic 50-yard pass from Jonathan Karastury to Derrick Brownridge.

Finally, Houston County secured the victory with a 13-yard West run with 8:41 to play.

Houston County improves to 2-1 on the season, while the Patriots drop to 1-2.
