Jordan 14, Temple 13: Red Jackets end losing streak at 26

Special to the Ledger EnquirerSeptember 14, 2013

October 8, 2010 -- that was the last time the Jordan football team had tasted victory -- 26 losses, two full seasons, 1,070 days.

Until Saturday afternoon at Kinnett Stadium.

The Red Jackets watched Temple miss a game-tying extra point late in the fourth quarter and then made a defensive stand to secure the 14-13 victory and end their losing streak at 26 games.

"I cannot tell you how happy I am right now with the way our players held on and put forth the effort," said Jordan coach Jim Brown after the contest in a cracking voice filled with emotion.

"This is the first time this team has tasted victory in 27 games, it's my anniversary and it is my first win as a head football coach all in the same day," he added as assistant coaches hugged him during the interview.

Jordan's defense led the way as they recovered three fumbles and sacked Temple quarterback Devin Lord four times. That included a sack in the final minute of play that caused a fumble recovered by Raymond Browder that sealed the win.

The contest itself was a tight game as the Red Jackets dominated the time of possession but had turnovers of its own, one on the Tigers' 11 and another on the 24 that stopped two drives.

However, the Red Jackets' William Harris found his favorite receiver, Javonte West, for the first touchdown, a 36-yard long pass, in the first quarter. Harris finished with 202 yards passing with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

West also was the recipient of the second touchdown, 10 yards on a fourth-down play in the third period. He finished with nine receptions for 132 yards.

Temple had only 82 yards in the first half, but 53 of those were on a touchdown to CJ Wilkerson from Lord to make it 7-7 at the half. Trailing 14-7, Lord hit a 20-yarder to Phillip Chandler with only 2:41 left, but Thirsten Jackson's PAT was wide and that was the margin of victory.
