Central 41, R.E. Lee 38: Red Devils hang on for victory

Central scored on offense, defense and special teams to take a 24-3 first half lead but it took scoring twice in just over a minute in the fourth quarter and recovering an onside kick with 2:07 remaining in the game to pick up its first region win 41-38.

R. E. Lee outscored Central 14-3 in the third period and shut down the Red Devil offense to pull to within 27-17 entering the final stanza.

On the General's first play of the fourth quarter Anthony Hooks hit Wonya Harris for a 42-yard pass setting up a 3-yard run by Adrian King. The two point conversion failed leaving the score at 27-23.

Central appeared to put the game away with two scores in 71 seconds on the ensuing two possessions.

After having a negative 11-yards of total offense in the third period, the Red Devil offense got untracked on its first possession of the fourth period going 73-yards in 4 plays to go up 34-23 on Ryan Humphrey's 21-yard run through the middle of the General defense.

R. E. Lee attempted a fake punt on its ensuing drive that fell short setting Central up at the General 25-yard line.

Traveon Samuel scored his third touchdown of the night with a 25-yard run with 6:59 remaining. Cameron Herring's PAT put Central up 41-23.

R. E. Lee was not finished as they drove 50 yards in seven plays to pull to within 41-30 when Hooks found Pervis Martin on a 22-yard scoring pass with 4:33 remaining in the game.

Devon Detamphayvanh's onside kick was then recovered by teammate Deontrez Leonard setting up the Generals at their own 49-yard line.

On second and goal at the 6 Hooks found Kendarius Hamilton in the endzone for the score. Hooks then hit Michael Huntley on the two point conversion to get within a field goal at 41-38.

Samuel had his biggest play of the game on the second onside kick when he caught and cradled the kick to preserve the win.

After forcing R. E. Lee into its a 3-and-out on its first possession, Samuel returned a low, bouncing punt 49-yards for a score and a 7-0 Red Devil lead.

The Generals answered with a 10-play drive moving the ball from its own 16-yard line to the Central 20 where Devon Detamphayvanh hit a 37-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3 with 3:03 left in the first period.

Central drove 54-yards in nine plays and went up 14-3 with 47 seconds remaining in the first quarter when Zion Webb hit Samuel on a 13-yard touchdown pass.
