Diego Valeri netted the only goal of the match on Friday as the Portland Timbers solidified their playoff hopes with a 1-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids at Jeld-Wen Field.
Coming off a 1-1 draw with Chivas USA last week, the Timbers had the upper hand from the outset and took advantage of a mistake from the Colorado backline to snatch the lead just 13 minutes into the game.
Rodney Wallace set the scoring play in motion as he headed a poor defensive clearance by Colorado's Drew Moor into acres of space for Valeri, who took a quick touch on the run and expertly chipped it over the head of Rapids goalkeeper Clint Irwin, who had come off his line to challenge the shot.
Valeri's goal was his third in as many matches for the Timbers, who took the narrow margin into the locker room.
Colorado came out of the locker room hoping to find an equalizer as Designated Player Gabriel Torres was inserted in the in the 55th minute to give the Rapids an offensive spark.
Colorado created several quality scoring chances over the final 20 minutes of play but the Timbers back line held firm to collect the all-important three points on home soil.
The result sees the Timbers rise to third place in the West on 46 points, while the Rapids drop to fourth with 45 points.
