Muscogee County School District announces open houses, selection timeline for magnet programs

The Muscogee County School District has announced the 2013-14 schedule for secondary school magnet program open houses and the timeline for the selection process.

The district's eight high schools and four of the 12 middle schools contain magnet programs that attract students interested in specialized courses. The magnets are allowed to enroll students from across the district, regardless of their attendance zone. The students must apply and be accepted according to the magnet's criteria.

Here is this year's schedule of open houses for the magnets:

Here is the district's timeline to determine which students are selected into the magnet programs:

• Sept. 30: Department of Research and Evaluation provide data disks to middle and high school magnet programs containing names, addresses and standardized test scores for all fifth-graders and eighth-graders.

• Oct. 9: Magnet programs allowed to contact potential magnet students in the fifth and eighth grades

• Oct. 18: Middle schools send an electronic copy of eighth-grade honor roll, principal's list and grades for the first nine weeks to each high school principal.

• Oct. 16 to Dec. 20: Magnet programs conduct open houses.

• Feb. 8: Magnet programs required to have all magnet entrance exams completed.

• Feb. 10: Magnet schools mail final round of acceptance or denial letters.

• Feb. 21: Deadline for parents/legal guardians to return academy/magnet transfer request forms to schools, acknowledging acceptance into program.

• Feb. 28: Magnet program coordinators send academy/magnet transfer request forms to central registration office. Only students who are new to the school district can apply and be approved to attend a magnet program after this date.
