By DAVID MITCHELL — dmitchell@ledger-enquirer Sydney Sprague didn't know she was hitting .431 for the Columbus softball team so far this season. She also didn't know that was the highest average for the Lady Blue Devils. When told that was the case, the senior shortstop gave a confused look, laughed and shrugged her shoulders. "I didn't know," she said with a laugh. "I guess I just kind of focus on getting the job done." The job this year is filling the cleats of Alexis Jones, last year's leadoff hitter and a senior presence on a young team that finished fifth in the Class AAAA state tournament. While Sprague admits she was a little nervous about taking over such a crucial role in the lineup, the resulting success has been undeniable. Setting the table, she has helped lead her team to a 15-6 record, 7-2 in the region, and an average of 6.2 runs per game. Read more here:
