It's a great weekend for a road trip.
That's because Georgias State Parks & Historic Sites will offer free admission and parking on Saturday, Sept. 28.
"Sponsored by the Friends of Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites, the celebration brings attention to ways that parks enrich communities and the importance of local volunteerism and participation in outdoor recreation," according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
Many state parks will offer special events in conjunction with the celebration. Click here for a list of options.
For example, F.D. Roosevelt State Park in Pine Mountain will host a Family Fishing Day on Lake Franklin from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday. Families are invited to bring a picnic and fishing gear to try their luck with bream, bass and catfish on 25-acre Lake Franklin. A fishing license is not required for the Saturday event. Worms will be available for purchase. Meet at the small group camp past Roosevelt Stables.
While admission and parking are free, the fishing event costs $5 per person. Call 706-663-4858.
Also happening at F.D. Roosevelt State Park this weekend? The North Face Endurance Challenge, which spans trail races in a variety of distances and happens Saturday and Sunday. The longer distances happen Saturday and the shorter ones take place Sunday.
Online registration is closed, but day-of registration is available. Click here for prices and details.
If you're participating in the trail races, remember there is no parking at the start/finish. Shuttles will be provided to and from the event. Meet at the beach area at Callaway Gardens just west of Highway 27 intersection on 354.
