Students at a local high school invite the community to join their anti-bullying campaign next month, including your chance to be in a music video filmed on Broadway.
Well, the gathering Northside High School students are organizing won't be on the Broadway in New York, but the music video combining lip synching and audio dubbing, called lip dub, will be filmed on Broadway in Columbus at 6 p.m. Oct. 22.
The Distributive Education Clubs of America chapter at Northside, comprising students studying marketing, created the Man Up Against Bullying campaign. To participate in the video, you must register by the Oct. 11 deadline via an email sent to firstname.lastname@example.org with the following information:
Team leader's full name
Expected number of participants in your team
Your organization's name
Your email address
Your phone number
A mandatory meeting for team leaders will be Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. in the Northside auditorium. Teams should produce an anti-bullying slogan and T-shirt or wear their organization's shirt at the video's filming and bring anti-bullying signs and banners.
The Northside students also seek sponsors for their campaign. Use the same email address to pledge sponsorship for one of the following:
Anti-bullying children's book contest: $300 for first-place sponsor
Anti-bullying children's book contest: $150 for second-place sponsor
Anti-bullying children's book contest: $75 for third-place sponsor
Anti-bullying scarecrow contest: ice cream party sponsor
Billboard sponsorship: $1,000 platinum level
Billboard sponsorship: $500 gold level
Billboard sponsorship: $250 silver level
Billboard sponsorship: $100 bronze level
Checks made payable to NHS DECA and a copy of your organization's logo should be mailed to Libby Clay at Northside High School, 2002 American Way, Columbus, GA 31907.
The campaign's monthlong series of events will include weekly activities at Northside such as:
Man-Up Monday, when students will receive bow ties and fake mustaches, and a photo both will be set up during lunch for them to take goofy pictures.
* Transformation Tuesday, when students can take a photo of a new friend or someone they normally don't talk to and post it on Instagram with the hashtag #nhsmakenewfriends.
Pledge Wall Wednesday, when students can sign a pledge to be a friend and not a bully. The pledge will change each week, but each pledge will relate to standing up against bullying.
Twitter Thursday, when students can tweet positive comments to each other with the hashtag #nhsspeakagainstbullying.
Forgive and Forget Fridays, when students can write on a poster in the school's atrium about how they made a positive difference that day. Prizes will be awarded for the best photo from Transformation Tuesday and the best tweet from Twitter Thursday.
Special events will include Peace Day, when students can dress in 1970s attire to promote harmony, and Wordless Wednesday, when the school will have a moment of silence for lives lost due to bullying.
The website bullyingstatistics.org states that "in about 85 percent of bullying cases, no intervention effort is made on the part of students, teachers, parents or administration." About 42 percent of kids have been bullied while online with one in four being verbally attacked more than once.
About 35 percent of kids have been threatened online.
About 58 percent of kids and teens have reported that something mean has been said about them or to them online.
About 77 percent of students have admitted to being the victim of one type of bullying or another.
The American Justice Department reports that one out of ever four kids will be bullied sometime throughout their adolescence.
46 percent of males and 26 percent of females have admitted to being victims in physical fights as reported by the Bureau of Justice School.
