CSU men's golf tees off today

The Columbus State men's golf team tees off for its 2013-14 season this morning in the Aflac/Cougar Invitational at the Country Club of Columbus.

The 18-team field begins at 8:45 a.m. with a shotgun start. Round 2 will be played this afternoon. The third and final round will be played at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

CSU finished second last season. But Jesse Gibson won medalist honors. It was CSU's only individual win of the 2012-13 season.

Gibson, a redshirt junior, returns for the Cougars. He led CSU with a stroke average of 73.6, earning first-team All-Peach Belt Conference whiners as well as honorable mention All-American honors.

Also returning is redshirt sophomore Robert Mize. The son of Masters champion Larry Mize earned second-team All-PBC honors as a freshman. He had two top-10 finishes.

He was second on the team with a 74.2 average.

Last season's runner-up finish in the Aflac/Cougar was one of five second-place finishes for the Cougars. One of those five was in the Peach Belt Conference tournament.

The Cougars also had three third-place finishes and didn't finish worse than seventh in any regular-season event.

The other teams in the Aflac/Cougar field includes Florida Southern, North Alabama, Georgia College, Coker, Valdosta State, Carson-Newman, UNC Pembroke. Florida Tech, Delta State, Clayton State, Georgia Southwestern, Lander, St. Leo. Lee. Post, Montevallo and West Florida.
