ATHENS Marshall Morgan is feeling a lot better about himself these days, using his foot to redeem himself.
It definitely feels good, and Im glad that everyone I let down in the boating incident, Im kind of trying to make them proud. My family and my hometown, Morgan said.
The boating incident he was referring to was a summer arrest for boating under the influence of alcohol, which led to a two-game suspension. His replacement as Georgias place-kicker, walk-on Patrick Beless, didnt miss a kick.
But Morgan got his job back upon his return, and hes showed why: The SEC named him special teams player of the week on Monday, after Morgan went three-for-three on field goal attempts, including a 55-yarder that ultimately was the scoring difference in the three-point win over LSU.
I asked a few kids after the game (about the 55-yarder), Morgan said. We were in the locker room. I was like: You were probably doubting I was gonna hit that, right? And theyre like: Yeah, I didnt think you were gonna make that. I was wondering why coach Richt was kicking a field goal. But now yeah, I got faith (in you).
In the two games since his return he is 4-for-5 on field goals, with the only miss coming from 52 yards, and perfect on extra point attempts. Its a big departure from how he started last year, missing three extra points, and dinging a few more off the uprights, as well as some short field goals.
Its a big confidence booster, Morgan said on Monday. Just makes me a lot more comfortable now. I just feel my teammates have a lot more faith in me now.
Gurley misses practice
As expected, star tailback Todd Gurley sat out Mondays practice with a sprained ankle. Head coach Mark Richt, speaking on his weekly radio show, reiterated that Gurley is day-to-day.
We just dont know how long itll take before hell be able to play again, Richt said. Hes gotta keep getting rehab and keep working it until hes ready to go. Ankles are different for different players.
Keith Marshall, who would replace Gurley in the starting lineup, shrugged off questions about whether he would carry more of a load. Marshall said he also hasnt spoken to Gurley, his roommate, about his status.
We just talked like normal, Marshall said. Weve just been hanging out and stuff. We havent really talked about it.
