Sports briefs: CSU's Mize named Peach Belt Golfer of the Week; High school volleyball, softball results

October 3, 2013

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Following his performance at the Aflac/Cougar Invitational, redshirt-sophomore Robert Mize was selected as the Peach Belt Conference Golfer of the Week announced by the league office Thursday.

This is the second career weekly honor for the Columbus native. He received his first in April of last season.

Mize helped lead Columbus State to a team victory topping a field of 18 teams that included 13 ranked or receiving votes in the latest GolfWorld/Nike Golf Division II Coaches' Poll. The victory was the first for the Cougars since 2010.

In addition to the team victory, Mize captured the individual victory finishing at six-under par through the three rounds.

After the first two rounds on day one, Mize was in a tie for fourth place at two-under, four shots back of the leader.

Still two shots back with three holes to play, he stepped up his play with a birdie at 16 to pull him within one followed by an eagle on 17 to vault him into the lead. A par on 18 sealed the first victory of his collegiate career.

Mize and Columbus State return to the links on Monday as they open play at the Indian Bayou Classic in Destin, Fla.
