Columbus State 3, USC Aiken 2: CSU wins close match

AIKEN, S.C. -- The Columbus State Lady Cougars volleyball team won a close 3-2 match over USC Aiken Friday.

USC Aiken won the first set 25-16 and the fourth set 25-17, but the Lady Cougars took the second set 25-20, the third set 25-23 and held on to win the fifth set 15-11.

Erika Gelzinyte led the team with 13 kills. She also had six aces and 16 digs.

Katie Poole had 10 kills and 10 digs, and Cheyenne Swenson totaled seven kills and six digs.

Kierston Smith had 19 assists and nine digs, while Ivana Kazic tallied 16 assists and 13 digs. Caitlyn Merrit matched Gelzinyte in digs with 16.

Columbus State is now 8-6 on the year and 2-3 in Peach belt Conference play. The Lady Cougars will play at Lander University today at 2 p.m.
