Brookstone 19, Hawkinsville 14: Freshman leads Cougars to win

October 11, 2013

Behind a resilient defense and led by freshman quarterback Jaqwon Roberts, Brookstone rallied from a 14-0 deficit to defeat Hawkinville 19-14 Friday night to the delight of a homecoming crowd at Rex Knight Field.

Trailing by two touchdowns in the second quarter, Roberts entered the game -- replacing senior starter Miller Page -- and proceeded to lead the Cougars on a 65-yard drive, completing three passes and scoring on a 1-yard sneak. The touchdown cut the lead to 14-7 where it stood at halftime.

In the third quarter, Page kicked a field goal at 3:31 to make it 14-10.

On the ensuing kickoff, Brookstone's Jensen Price recovered an onside kick and the Cougars were in business again at the Red Devils 43. But an interception thrown by Brooks near the goal line stymied the drive.

In the fourth quarter, the Cougars got the ball back after a Hawkinsville punt and drove to the Red Devils 34 where they faced fourth-and-3. The Cougars converted on a pass to Kordell Braxton. But again the drive stalled and Brookstone settled for a 27-yard field goal by Page to make it 14-13.

Hawkinsville was forced to punt on its next possession and Brookstone got the ball back on its own 32 with 2:49 remaining in the game.

On the next play, Roberts delivered a pass to Braxton streaking down the left sideline, who caught the ball at midfield and beat his man the distance to put Brookstone up 19-14. A 2-point conversion failed.

Hawkinsville had one last gasp but failed to convert on fourth-and-15 and Brookstone took a knee to seal victory in the Region 4-A matchup.

Both Brookstone and Hawkinsville are now 3-3, 1-2 in region play.

Brookstone ran a no-huddle past-first spread offense most of the game, while Hawkinsville stuck to the power running game.

"We have very talented receivers," said Brookstone coach Brad Dehem.

Braxton led all Cougar receivers with 7 catches for 186 yards and one touchdown. Roberts was 16 of 26 passing for 280 yards.

"I didn't flinch when he came in," said Dehem on his freshman quarterback. "He started rolling and I just kept going with it."
