Derrick Newsome

A drunk man with a busted lip was arrested for possession of a controlled substance Sunday morning after knocking on people's doors, according to a Columbus police report.

At about 5:20 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to the 600 block of Brown Avenue in reference to someone who was knocking on doors.

At the scene, they met Derrick Newsome on the front porch of one of the homes. He was reportedly "extremely intoxicated" and had a busted lip, which he said came after someone punched him in the face at a club.

Newsome did not want to talk about his lip. Newsome said he wanted to go home.

While speaking with him, the officers observed a bag with more than 11 grams of possible marijuana in Newsome's front shirt pocket. A search following his arrest also turned up a small bag containing three grams of white powder -- possibly cocaine.

Newsome was arrested and taken to Midtown Medical Center (formerly The Medical Center) for clearance to be taken to the Muscogee County Jail.
