SEALE, Ala. -- After three scoreless quarters, the final 8:30 of regulation was drama-filled in Valley High's 13-7 come-from-behind win over Russell County on Friday night.
Russell County opened the fourth quarter with a 50-yard, nine-play drive to break the scoreless drought and take a 7-0 lead on Joshua Johnson's 12-yard run.
Valley answered with a 14-play, 78-yard drive to tie the game at 7-7 on D. J. Bailey's 2-yard run.
Matravious Williams had rushed for 24 yards to the Warriors' 1-yard line two plays earlier.
Cameron Brooks returned the ensuing kickoff 66 yards to the Rams' 25-yard line. Russell County was able to move the ball 1 yard before calling on Patrick Flynn to attempt a 42-yard field goal that missed just left with 56 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
Valley opted to run out the clock and await overtime.
Russell County went on offense first in the overtime period. The ball was placed on the Rams' 10-yard line.
On first down the Warriors ran their wildcat package and Johnson's hand off to Caleb Smith was fumbled and recovered by the Rams.
After Russell County was called for 12 men on the field, Valley had a first and goal at the Warrior 5. On first down Bailey was stopped for no gain.
Valley then ran its own wildcat package and Williams was able to dive for the left pylon for the touchdown and the 13-7 final score.
Bailey led all rushers with 111 yards rushing on 27 carries.
Russell County fell to 4-4 (3-3 Class 5A Region 2).
Valley improved to 5-3 (5-1).
The Warriors will need to beat BTW next week to clinch their first playoff berth since 2001.
