BOWDON, Ga. — The Bowdon High School football team celebrated homecoming by securing home-field advantage for the first round of the Class AA state playoffs and keeping pace for a run at the 5-AA title on Friday evening at Warren P. Sewell Field.

The Red Devils beat visiting Spencer in a 40-8 decision to clinch at least a top-two finish in the 5-AA standings, holding an athletic Greenwave off the scoreboard for 45 minutes before the second-string defense allowed a late touchdown.

Offensively, No. 8 Bowdon (8-0, 6-0 Region 5-AA) road the rushing attack of a three-headed monster in Chris Keith, Jarod McKey and Pearce Kirk, who combined for 286 yards and five touchdowns on 24 carries, most of which came in the first half.

Bowdon scored on four of its first five drives during the first half, starting with a pair of Kirk touchdown runs — 10 and 13 yards, respectively — to go up 12-0 by the 3:41 mark after a missed PAT and failed two-point conversion. The second scoring drive was an 11-play, 98-yard march on the heels of a Holland interception at the Bowdon two-yard line.

The first half was marred by penalty flags — pink ones in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month — as there were a combined 20 infractions for 160 yards. For the game, there were a combined 32 penalties for 275 yards.

Spencer finally got on the scoreboard after Tarvaraska Davis connected with Ervin Davis on a 52-yard pass, setting up a 2-yard touchdown run by Damarkus Robins with 2:58 remaining in the game.

Tarvaraska Davis led the Greenwave offensive attack, completing 13-of-23 attempts for 194 yards with two interceptions. Ervin Davis caught three passes for 109 yards.
