Recap: Philadelphia vs. Sporting Kansas City

The Sports NetworkOctober 26, 2013

Chester, PA ( - The Philadelphia Union's playoff hopes were officially dashed on Saturday after the club suffered a 2-1 defeat to Sporting Kansas City at PPL in the regular season finale for both teams.

Coming off a 2-1 loss to Montreal last week, the Union needed to beat Sporting and hope for some help from results from Sunday's games, but the loss sees the Union miss the postseason for the second consecutive season.

Philadelphia was on the front foot early on and had the better of the play in the first half, but were unable to convert their chances and paid for their lack of finishing early in the second 45 minutes.

Just three minutes into the second period, Sporting struck with an expertly- played set piece as defender Matt Besler launched a long throw-in into the box that was flicked on to the back post by Lawrence Olum to the head of Graham Zusi to nod home.

Philadelphia finally got on the board in the 88th minute when Jack McInerney found the ball amid a scramble in the penalty area and slotted it home to the Union some late life.

But Sporting put the nail in the coffin in stoppage time as they caught the Union on the break as Teal Bunbury sent a quick low cross to an unmarked Olum, who calmly dispatched it to break the hearts of the 18,462 Union fans in attendance.

Philadelphia ends the season with a 12-12-10 mark, good for 46 points, a 12 point improvement over last season's eighth-place finish. Sporting, meanwhile, moves back atop the Supporters' Shield standings with 58 points.
