When two armed robbery suspects stepped out of the woods off Quincy Drive, they didn't expect to find Columbus police Cpl. Warren Fowler searching that location.
Fowler, 33, held the two men at gunpoint until other units could help take the suspects into custody.
Getting two gunmen off the street was enough to earn Fowler the Officer of the Month honor for September at the Columbus Police Department.
"It's nice for somebody to notice," Fowler said. "It's just part of my job. I don't feel I did anything that anybody else would have done."
Fowler, who works in the Motor Squad, was nearby on Aug. 28 when he heard a radio broadcast about a taxi cab driver getting robbed at gunpoint at Buena Vista Road and Fairfield Drive around 1:15 p.m.
As the first officer on the scene, Fowler talked to the cab driver to get a description of the robbers before searching the area.
Three blocks from the location of the robbery, Fowler saw two men matching the exact description of the suspects.
"Every dog has its day," Fowler said of his ability to find the gunmen. "In my opinion, I got lucky. If I had turned left, I might have never seen them."
Both men had handguns in their possession when taken into custody.
"It turned out well," he said. "They are both convicted felons."
The suspects were taken back to the Buena Vista Road location where the cab driver was waiting. He positively identified the two men as the robbers.
Fowler was nominated for the honor by his supervisor Sgt. C.W. Anderson.
"It is because of hard work, professionalism and dedication to this department and the citizens of the city in which he works, that he was able to assist in the apprehension of two suspects," Anderson said in his recommendation.
A lifelong resident of Columbus, Fowler graduated from Columbus High School and earned an associate degree from Columbus State University.
He has six years with the department and he's leaning toward law enforcement as a career.
"I don't know if I will end it with Columbus," he said. "I probably will. This is where I grew up. I have a lot of ties here. At this point, that is the plan. I like it here."
