Harris County 24, Hardaway 7: Tough defense leads Harris County to win

Special to the Ledger-EnquirerNovember 1, 2013

Harris County scored touchdowns on its first two offensive possessions and held on to defeat Hardaway 24-7 Friday night at Tiger Stadium.

After receiving the opening kickoff the Tigers drove 56 yards in nine plays, all runs to take a 7-0 lead on Esaias Chapman's 6-yard scoring run. Harris County used five different ball carriers on the scoring drive.

Harris County forced a Hawk 3-and-out on the Hardaway opening possession.

The Tigers went to the air for the first time on the second play of the drive. TaQuon Marshall hit Chapman in stride for a 59-yard touchdown pass down the left side of the field for a 14-0 lead with 6:33 remaining in the first quarter.

Chapman was the leading rusher in the game with 109 yards on 23 carries.

The Tigers pushed the score to 17-0 before the half when Isaac Grimes kicked a 37-yard field goal with 3:48 remaining in the second quarter.

The Tigers defense limited the Hawks to -1 yards of total offense in the first half and 14 yards of total offense for the game.

The first five minutes of the third period were penalty-filled as Hardaway had 3 for 30 yards and Harris County had 2 for 30 yards.

"When those guys play like that and they don't give up its just one of those games," Harris County coach Tommy Parks said of the third quarter.

The Tigers moved the ball from its own 44-yard line to the Hardaway 11 before Marshall was chased around while dropping back to throw. He ran backwards and attempted a late throw that was picked off by Darius Green and returned 64 yards for a score, cutting the lead to 17-7.

Harris County pushed the lead back to 17 points when Marshall hit Josh Hutchinson on a fake punt for a 35-yard pass and a 24-7 lead.

The win improved Harris County to 7-2 and set up a showdown with Thomas County Central next weekend in Hamilton.
