A boy, 16, was charged with carrying a weapon within a school zone Friday after he shot himself in the right hip behind Key Elementary School, Columbus police said.

No one else was injured in the 7:25 a.m. shooting on Mesa Street at Beatrice Avenue. The teen was taken by ambulance to Midtown Medical Center, formerly The Medical Center, where he was in good condition.

Police found the injured teen curled in a fetal position after they went to area to check on a person who had been shot. A .38-caliber revolver was found at the scene.

The teen first told police that he was shot by an unknown gunman who had left the scene. Police learned the teen’s gunshot was self inflicted after talking to witnesses.
