Coroner: Rescuers had to cut roof off car to retrieve woman killed in Illges Road fatality

One woman was killed and another passenger trapped after a car crashed into a tree on Illges Road early Monday, Muscogee County Coroner's Office representatives said.

Coroner Buddy Bryan said rescue workers had to cut the roof off the car after responding to the scene of the wreck around 1:15 a.m. The deceased, 50-year-old Wendy Blackmon, was pinned between the seat and the steering wheel when workers found her, Bryan said.

Police are still uncertain what caused the wreck.

Bryan said investigators tentatively posit that Blackmon, who was pronounced dead of blunt force trauma, was driving north on Illges Road near Carver High School sometime around midnight when the accident occurred.

"Her car was against a tree facing south," Bryan said. "So the car must have spun around."

Her passenger, a man of unspecified age, was transported to the Midtown Medical Center for unspecified injuries. He was still responsive when he was transported, Bryan said.

Blackmon's body will not be sent to the Atlanta crime lab for an autopsy. However, a sample of her blood will undergo toxicology tests to determine whether any substances were at play in the accident.

More information will be added as it becomes available.
