United Way seeks underwear donations

Women in the Chattahoochee Valley are being asked to support the United Way Friday by donating undergarments at a "Wear One, Bring One" fundraising event.

The bras and underwear will be collected at the 2nd Annual Power of the Purse Women's Leadership Luncheon, and distributed to women in need. The event will be held 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the St. Luke Ministry Center, 301 11th Street. Keynote speaker will be Ann Stallard, co-founder of the National Women's Leadership Council & CEO of Graphics Communication Corporation.

All guests are asked to bring a new undergarment in a small gift bag. There also will be an opportunity to donate money so additional underwear can be purchased.

"While fancy underwear is fun, the underwear the women need most is practical black, white and nude colors," organizers said in a press release. "So wear one and bring one to help make a difference in the life of a woman in crisis."

The event is organized by the local Women’s Leadership Council, which recognizes women who give $1,000 or more annually to United Way or participate in the Leadership Step-Up program starting at $500.

Last year, the council raised about $5,115 for the underwear and used the money to launch a Women’s Undergarment Voucher Program in partnership with the Goodwill Industries of the Southern Rivers and JCPenney. The council collected more than 900 undergarments that were distributed to women served by United Way agencies.

Sponsorship levels for this year's event are: $500 event sponsor (includes 4 reserved seats); $1,000 corporate sponsorship (includes 1 reserved table)and $2,500 presenting sponsorship (includes 2 reserved tables).
