Northside broke its seven-game losing streak Thursday night and finished the 2013 season on a winning note by defeating cross-town rival Hardaway 31-7 at Kinnett Stadium.
The Patriots used the ball-control running of Larry Gilyard and some key passes from Jonathan Karastury to Kalan Watts to seal the win.
Hardaway started the game without the services of Justin Crawford, Malik Fowler, Blake Berry and Cole Dansby. With Berry not in the lineup, the offense was turned over to freshman Antonio Campbell and most of the running was by another freshman, Kamron McFolley.
Late in the fourth quarter with Northside leading 24-7, an altercation broke out and both teams were whistled for unsportsmanlike conduct. Each team lost three players through ejections. The players were not immediately identified.
Northside got on the board first after Hardaway's initial drive stalled on the 27. Using a methodical ground game, the Patriots marked 73 yards on 13 plays and Gilyard finishing it with a 1-yard plunge on fourth-and-goal.
The Hawks tied the score at 7-7 taking advantage of a Patriot turnover and scored with 1:35 left before halftime with Campbell running in from the 2.
It took Northside only 44 seconds to get the lead back as Karastury hit a pass to Watts to set up a first-and-goal and Gilyard scored on a 4-yard run on the next play to make it 14-7, a lead it would never relinquish.
Northside then ate up the third period on a drive of 6:31 with Watts getting the final 2 yards and Gilyard getting key yardage inside to make it 21-7. Gilyard finished with 102 yards on 29 runs and two TD's while Watts caught three passes for 68 yards and had 48 yards and a score. Leading rusher for Hardaway was McFolley with 80 yards.
