The GHSA and AHSAA cross county state championships will be held on Saturday and, once again, Smiths Station will be front in center.

In the Alabama meet, which will be held at the Oakville Indian Mounds Park in Moulton, Ala., the Panthers girls and boys teams will both send 10 runners and challenge for a high finish in Class 6A.

The Smiths Station boys last won state in 1997 as a member of Class 5A. That was the last of a stretch in which the Panthers won three in a row and four of five. The Lady Panthers have never won a state title.

The Georgia meet will be held at the Carrollton High course in Carrollton and will feature a handful of local runners.

The Spencer High team, led by Eddie Stafford, will be in attendance for the Class AA events. Stafford has a personal record of 16:22 in the 5k and has won a number of times on the Columbus course.

Shaw's Hakeem Mustafaa posted a 16:33 at Carrollton earlier this year and will be on the short list of contenders once again.

Columbus players in all-star match

Columbus senior volleyball players Brianna Gogins and Ki'Anna Duncan were selected to participate in the Georgia Senior All-Star match at 5 p.m. Saturday at Woodward Academy in College Park.

There will be four teams of 10 players playing a round robin tournament, with each match consisting of three sets to 25.

The Georgia Volleyball Coaches Association selects the 40 seniors who take part in the tournament and divides them into teams.

Columbus coach Donna Fleming was selected as a co-coach for one of the teams.

The Lady Blue Devils won the 2013 Class AAAA state championship against Marist last Saturday.
