UAB 76, Columbus State 56: UAB controls game against CSU

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB Blazers men's basketball team defeated the Columbus State Cougars 76-56 in an exhibition game Friday.

After the first five minutes UAB had just a 9-6 lead over CSU, but the Blazers opened that gap to 19-10 at the 10:42 mark of the first half.

UAB finished the half with a 27-10 run, giving them a 46-23 lead. Both teams steadily added to their scores, but the Blazers had pulled away to a 70-40 lead by the 8:27 mark of the second half.

The Cougars were able to narrow that gap to 20 points, but it was not enough to overcome UAB's steady performance.

CSU hit 23 of 66 shots from the field (34.8 percent) and hit only four of 23 3-pointers (17.4 percent).

Shane Heyward led CSU with 10 points on the night. He also had seven rebounds.

R.J. Sessions had nine points, four rebounds and an assists, DeAngelo Kirkland totaled eight points, five rebounds and one assists, B.J. Battle tallied six points and five rebounds and Kenney Funderburck had six points and one rebound.

Columbus State will host Carver Bible Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m.
