Brookstone 43, Greenville 14: Cougars roll past Greenville

On senior night at Rex Knight Field, Brookstone scored 36 points in the first quarter Friday and rolled to a 43-14 win over Greenville.

Big playmakers for the Cougars were freshman quarterback Jaqwon Roberts, who passed for four touchdowns, and sophomore running back/cornerback Prather Hudson, who scored two touchdowns, one on an 11-yard run, the other on a 35-yard interception return.

The win secured Brookstone (6-4, 4-3 Region 4-A) a spot in the Class A private school playoffs which start Friday. The Cougars first-round opponent was unknown at press time.

Starting strong, Brookstone took a 7-0 lead at 9:27 in the first quarter when Roberts found senior receiver Leye Olubawale streaking wide open down the left sideline for a 41-yard touchdown.

The Cougars scored again on their next possession when Roberts connected with senior receiver Mark McVay on an inside slant route for a 17-yard scoring strike. A 2-point conversion made it 15-0.

Brookstone went up 22-0 on the next series when Hudson intercepted a Greenville pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown. The Cougars capitalized on 7 Greenville turnovers, 4 of which came in the first quarter. Brookstone's Walker Cottrell had two fumble recoveries and one interception. With 2:04 left in the first quarter Roberts connected with Olubowale again for a 13-yard touchdown.After another Greenville fumble, this time recovered by Brookstone's Nick Sargent, the Cougars struck again for their fifth touchdown of the first quarter when Hudson ran it up the middle, sidestepped defenders and scored from 11 yards out with 4 seconds on the clock, making the score 36-0.

Greenville finally got on the scoreboard in the second quarter when quarterback Jamal McKee passed to Elijah Amie for a 29-yard touchdown.

Brookstone only scored once in the second half when Roberts threw his fourth touchdown pass of the night for 28 yards to junior Grant Davidson.

Roberts was 10-24 passing for 179 yards. Leading Brookstone receivers were Olubawale (3 catches, 69 yards, 2 touchdowns) and Davidson (4 catches, 56 yards, 1 TD). Hudson was the leading Cougars rusher, gaining 103 yards on 10 carries.

Brookstone totaled 369 offensive yards, compared to Greenville's 200.
