(update) Harris County 38, Thomas County Central 35: Tigers rally to beat Jackets

Special to the Ledger-EnquirerNovember 8, 2013

Hamilton, Ga. -- Esaias Chapman's 38-yard touchdown run with 6:49 left to play proved to be the winning score as Harris County defeated Thomas County Central 38-35 Friday night at Tiger Stadium.

Harris County had trailed the entire contest and were down 35-30 when the Tigers took over from their 22 and went 78 yards to take the lead.

Harris County, TCC and Lee County all finished with 4-1 records in Region 1-AAAAA. Since the teams went 1-1 against the other two, the next tiebreaker was points allowed in all region games. Lee County had allowed the fewest, so it was declared the region champion.

Once that tie was broken, then it reverted back to head-to-head, and with Harris County's win over TCC, the Tigers earned the No. 2 seed.

The Tigers will host at Region 3 No. 3 seed Glynn Academy on Friday.

The game was a close contest the entire night and the biggest lead by Thomas County Central was eight points. However, the biggest play for the Yellow Jackets was the final play of the third period. That's when the Yellow Jackets quarterback, Adam Choice ran for 4 yards. He was injured on the play and did not return.

With Choice out of the game, the Yellow Jackets were forced to punt and that punt led to the winning scoring drive by the Tigers.

Chapman had a standout game for the Tigers and ran for 134 yards on 16 carries and scored three touchdowns. Quarterback TaQuon Marshall also did his share on offense with 127 rushing yards on only seven tries with a TD and passed 76 yards for another TD.

Thomas County did have one last drive at the end of the game with running back Deondre Cooksey at the controls. Cooksey did have the Yellow Jackets down to a first and goal in the final two minutes but the Tiger defense stiffened and forced a 24-yard field goal by Gavin Wilson. Wilson's kick in the final 25 seconds sailed wide and the Tigers could celebrate the win.

Prior to the injury Choice had a super game. He ran for 181 yards in the first half and scored two touchdowns running and passed for a touchdown. In the second half, he passed for a second touchdown to account for four of the Yellow Jackets 5 touchdowns. He finished with 273 yards on 26 carries on the ground and 36 in the air.

Cooksey had 93 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown but was unable to complete any passed while at quarterback.
