BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Columbus Cottonmouths defeated the Bloomington Thunder (an expansion team) 5-0 Saturday and 5-4 Friday.
In Saturday's game the Cottonmouths took an early 3-0 by the end of the first period with goals by Tory Allan (power play), Dan Bremner (short handed and Jason Gray (power play).
Bremner added another goal (assisted by Ian McNulty) at the 15:58 mark of the second period. Chris Bailer scored a short-handed goal (assisted by Matt Gingera) just under two minutes later to put the Snakes up 5-0.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the third period, and Columbus picked up the shutout victory.
In Friday's contest neither team made it onto the scoreboard until the second period. Bloomington scored first, but the Cottonmouths followed up with three goals.
Will Aide (assisted by Levi Lind and Gray) put in the first one at the 8:47 mark. Andy Willinger scored five minutes later on a power play (assisted by Jordan Draper and Allan) and McNulty added the last goal of the period at the 18:38 mark (assisted by Lind and Gingera).
Mike Switzer scored (assisted by Bremner and Gingera) at the 16:35 mark of the third period, and Daniel Amesbury scored the final goal (empty net) for the Snakes at 18:14 on the clock.
The Thunder scored three more goals, but the Cottonmouths were able to hang on.
Columbus (3-3) will travel to play the Mississippi RiverKings Friday at 8:05 p.m.
