Smiths Station 41, Enterprise 34: Johnny Woods' pick in second OT gives Smiths Station the win

ENTERPRISE, Ala. -- For nearly the entire night, Smiths Station wide receiver Johnny Woods caught everything he got his hands on.

So, when he was on defense and the ball was thrown his way in the second overtime period, there was little doubt what he would do.

Woods, a 6-foot-4 senior, stepped in front of Enterprise quarterback Ryan Allgood's pass on third-and-15, intercepting the ball and running 15 yards with it before he realized it had sealed a 41-34 win for Smiths Station.

"That's Johnny," Panthers coach Mark Rose said. "Johnny on the spot."

The win sends Smiths Station into the state quarterfinals, where it will host the winner of Wetumpka and McGill next week. It is the Panthers' first trip to the quarterfinals since 1996.

Woods also caught seven passes for 135 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown came with six minutes, 50 seconds remaining in the game to give Smiths Station a 27-24 lead. Woods caught the ball at the 2-yard

line, spun around the defender and fell into the front-right corner.

That touchdown came after Smiths Station's offense had struggled to regain the momentum it had in the first half.

It scored 20 before the break, mixing the run and pass to great effect, but was shut out until Woods' touchdown.

The offense needed just two plays in overtime, however, to score two touchdowns.

The first, a 10-yard pass from Gilmore to Ledarion Heath to tie the score, came after the Panthers defense surrendered a 1-yard run by Allgood.

The second was a 10-yard run by running back DeVante Marshall that proved to be the difference.

Three plays later, after an Enterprise touchdown was negated by a hold, Woods ended the game with his eighth catch of the night, this one on defense.

"Coach always tells us big-time players make big-time plays in big games," Woods said. "That's what I did."

Woods said the connection with Gilmore in the first half was great. Gilmore had one of his more productive days in the passing game as Smiths Station's quarterback.

He passed for 230 yards and three touchdowns, one to Woods, one to Heath and a 24-yarder to Tre Trimble in the first half to put the Panthers ahead 20-14.

"What a game Jerrell had," Rose said of his quarterback. "We came out blazing. We knew we were going to have to score with them, and we did early on."

Marshall scored the first touchdown for the Panthers, a 5-yarder to go up 7-0, and Nigel Lawrence ran for a 19-yard score to go ahead 13-7.

The Panthers had to keep pace because of a dangerously balanced attack for Enterprise, which struck back quickly with a 55-yard run by Hezekiah Woods after Smiths Station took the early lead.

Allgood hit Will Brigman for a 22-yard pass to take a 14-13 lead and following a botched punt return, Allgood ran for a 1-yard touchdown to give Enterprise a 20-14 lead.

That score came after J.J. Dancy fumbled a punt after he appeared to call for a fair catch and was hit by an Enterprise player.

Enterprise also utilized a long hook-and-ladder play and another pass to set up the game-tying field goal with two seconds remaining in the game, a 50-yarder by Cade Stinnett.

Rose said Enterprise deserved a ton of credit for their performance.

"Hats off to them," he said. "They played an unbelievable game in an unbelievable environment. They have an outstanding offense."
