Columbus, Northside cheerleading squads advance

From staff reportsNovember 15, 2013

The Columbus and Northside cheerleading teams qualified on Friday for today's state cheerleading championships at the Columbus Civic Center.

Northside qualified in Class AAAAA, while Columbus did the same in Class AAAA.

"It was not flawless and we have room for improvement, but the girls plan to bring it and win state," said Columbus coach Merrimore McDonald.

"I think it went awesome," Northside coach Jessica Smart said. "We had one little mishap on a stunt, but it wasn't an ugly fall. It was something we could make up for, and the routine didn't disappoint us at all."

Northside will compete today at 2 p.m. as the school works toward its first cheerleading title.

Columbus won AAA state cheerleading title in 2008 and 2010. The Blue Devils will compete again today at 10:30 a.m.

Harris County also competed in the AAAAA sectionals Friday but failed to qualify.
