UPDATE: Smiths Station inmate comes back after escaping

Update: Allen Simmons turned himself in at the Lee County Detention Center "without incident" Wednesday at about noon, according to Opelika police.


A Smiths Station man escaped from his work detail at the Opelika Police Department Monday morning, according to Opelika police.

In a release, police said that Allen Paul Simmons, 29, was on a work detail from the Lee County Detention Center. Simmons walked away from his detail "at some point." The escape was reported at about 10:10 a.m.

Simmons is charged with possession of marijuana in the second degree, burglary in the third degree and theft of property in the third degree, according to the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

The case is being investigated by the Opelika Police Department and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
