Montevideo, Uruguay (SportsNetwork.com) - Uruguay claimed the final place in next summer's World Cup on Wednesday after battling to a scoreless second-leg draw and 5-0 aggregate victory over Jordan at the Centenario Stadium.
Uruguay racked up goals from Maxi Pereira, Christian Stuani, Nicolas Lodeiro, Cristian Rodriguez and Edinson Cavani in a 5-0 first-leg rout on Nov. 13.
Working with a huge lead, it took the hosts a little time to get running, but they had the better of the play for most of the first half and created several quality scoring chances. Finishing was a bit off over the opening 45 minutes, however, as the clubs went into the break scoreless.
After the break, Uruguay continued to generate scoring chances and came close just past the hour mark when defender Diego Lugano got free for a header off a corner kick, but directed the ball just past the left post.
After being thrashed in the opening leg, Jordan did well to hold a powerful Uruguay side off the score sheet on Wednesday, but they never threatened Uruguay goalkeeper Martin Silva's net as the hosts advanced to soccer's marquee event for the second consecutive time.
With the 32-team field set, the group stage draw will take place in early December.
